This is a great article that the Huffington Post published on brushing your teeth.  Something we do each day and most off us really don’t know (or care) where it all began.  I have made brushing more enjoyable by tracking down a toothbrush company I like and ordering some very nice toothpastes.  Keeps it interesting.

The Axeman's Hatchet

The Axeman's Hatchet

This is a blog post from another member of the BushcraftUSA forum.  It describes his method of creating an axe sheath. He does a much better job of showing how it’s done.   Axe Sheath Tutorial.

Great information on axes

Here are some great videos that have been shared by a fellow BushcraftUSA member Skogkniv.  Check out his other videos as well.

Here is what the sheath came out like after a hot dip in bees wax. Very rustic and utilitarian.   I like it allot.  What did I learn?  It’s worth investing a little more in some tools that will make the stitching look all nice.  I also purchased a leather hole punch.  I think I would have gotten a stitching awl instead.

The sheath that came with my Husqvarna Hatchet was too big.  I could take it off without unsnapping the strap.  Not good.  With the support of my friends on the BushcraftUSA.com forum, I mustered up the courage to attempt to make one myself.

First, I cut the shape of the blade around two pieces of leather glued together.  This is there to give the edge something to rest on besides the stitching.

Next I took a piece of heavy paper and traced the blade out on one side.  Folded it over and drew a sheath shape.  I gave some room for the stitching and the leather spacer.

After I used the template to cut the leather, I punched holes along the edge I intended to sew.

God knows how it came out as well as it did, but I am happy with it.

My next step will be treating the leather.  Most likely to a bees wax finish.
